Distance Learning at
Notre Dame Academy Elementary School
Notre Dame Academy Elementary is committed to continuing high-quality education for our students during this time of distance learning. Our approach is rooted in our Mission, our Root Beliefs, research on best practices from the field of education and from our friends and colleagues in schools that have previously experienced distance learning (from schools in the Midwest who use distance learning during snow days to schools in Asia and Europe who were out ahead of us in distance learning). We also believe in and explicitly teach the Habits of Mind and Growth Mindset. Flexibility, creativity, and innovation are key to our school culture and continue to be central to our approach.
What does distance learning at NDAE look like?
Our central communication platform is Google Classroom. Every morning, teachers send out the messages, lessons, instructions, and assignments for the day to their students. We believe in partnering with our parents and in responsive education. Therefore, our approach is designed to be flexible for the needs of our students and families, while structured to support our students. The majority of our direct instruction is crafted by the teachers and delivered through video to the students. The assigned tasks are “due” 24 hours later to give students time to complete tasks at a time that works best for them and their families and to accommodate for glitches in technology.
Specialty Classes and Enrichment
In addition to the core classes, the dedicated and talented Notre Dame Academy Elementary Specialty Faculty is working to build a library of resources, lessons, inspiration, and creativity, just for our NDAE family.
These lessons are not required but are highly recommended. We know that children need time for play, exploration, creativity, and “think time” as they grow. These experiences develop critical thinking, impulse control, perseverance, and emotional intelligence. They also bring joy, beauty, and wonder to our lives.
The students can do these activities themselves, or the whole family can join in the fun! These resources include:
