Originating from Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Thomas joins us as a fellow Knight or “Muskie” from Xavier University. Mrs. Thomas grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio where she attended the Jesuit college Xavier University and received her Bachelor’s of Science in Early Childhood Education (pre-K-3rd), her reading endorsement (pre-K -12th), and an endorsement in 4th/5th grade. While completing her Bachelor’s, Mrs. Thomas had the opportunity to study abroad in Peru, where she was able to apply her Literacy skills in a bilingual setting, partake in a cultural experience through host housing, and participate in a service project opportunity. She continued her education at Xavier University by enrolling in the Master’s of Education program allowing her to earn her Master’s of Education in Reading and teaching credentials in both Ohio and California. Over the past 6 years, Mrs. Thomas has taught students in Cincinnati, OH, Lima, Peru, and Las Vegas, NV. She has also had the chance to practice her passion for Literacy as a Reading Specialist by tutoring, teaching, and ongoing Literacy research.
Mrs. Thomas is ecstatic to begin her first year at Notre Dame Academy. She is excited to promote a rich environment of learning and thinking critically while incorporating 21st century skills to enhance students’ learning. This year students will learn a variety of reading strategies within the domains of their Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Vocabulary. As Mathematicians, students will articulate and explain their thinking, set goals, evaluate their product through a growth mindset lens, and hold themselves accountable for learning. In Social Studies, students will discover our state of California and all of its historic features including the Faith Missions that once took place and still are a landmark today. With the use of Kagan structures, all subjects are created around a positive community of learners where, engagement, collaboration, innovation, and reflection occur throughout each lesson. Mrs. Thomas plans each of her lessons with students’ understanding in mind and as the NDA Knights, students will embark on a year of learning adventures.
